Do I need a structural engineer for a house extension or loft conversion?

Yes, if your project involves removing or altering load-bearing elements (e.g. walls, beams, floors, roofs), you must have structural calculations and drawings prepared by a chartered structural engineer

Do I need planning permission for structural work?

Not always — planning permission and Building Regulations are separate.

  • Internal structural changes: Usually Building Regs only.
  • Extensions or loft conversions: May need both, depending on size and impact

Do I need a structural engineer for my home extension or renovation?

Yes, a structural engineer is essential when altering or adding to your property. We provide the necessary calculations and drawings for building control approval and for your builder to construct safely and correctly.

What are Building Regulation drawings, and why do I need them?

Building Regulation drawings are detailed plans that show how your design complies with UK construction standards — including structure, safety, drainage, and insulation. We prepare these drawings to ensure your project is approved and built correctly.

What is required for Building Regulations approval?

You must submit:

Structural drawings & calculations, Architectural plans, Specification of materials, Construction details
Local Building Control or an Approved Inspector reviews and approves these.

What are the party wall agreements, and do I need one?

A Party Wall Agreement (officially called a Party Wall Award) is a legal document required under the Party Wall etc. Act 1996.
It governs work that affects a shared wall or boundary between two properties.

The Act is designed to prevent and resolve disputes between neighbours when certain types of building work are planned.

How long does it take to receive structural drawings and calculations?

The timeline can vary depending on the complexity of the project. Typically, calculations are completed within a few days to a couple of weeks after the initial assessment.

How much do structural calculations cost?

Costs can vary depending on the project’s complexity and specific requirements. We offer a detailed estimate after an initial consultation.
